About the Australian Institute of Employment Rights (AIER)

The AIER is an independent body funded and governed entirely under the terms set out in its rules of association. An annual general meeting determines policies and elects an executive committee that is responsible for administrative affairs. This is chaired by the President and is made up of six representatives, including three Vice Presidents and three ordinary members as well as a Treasurer and the Executive Director.

The executive committee is based on the principle of tri-partite representation of employees, employers and independent persons, as exempli.ed by the International Labour Organization of the United Nations.

An advisory committee is composed of prominent academic and legal . gures from across Australia. The committee will contribute ideas and advice on current issues affecting the employment rights and standards.

• Introducing our new Executive Director

The Executive Committee is pleased to announce that Lisa Heap has been appointed as our new Executive Director replacing Rob Durbridge. Most recently Lisa was the Assistant Branch Secretary of the Australian Services Union (ASU) Victorian Authorities and Services Branch.  In this role Lisa worked closely with workers, peak bodies and employers in the community services sector. She successfully advocated with the Victorian Government for the extension of minimum employment protections to workers in the community sector following the introduction of the Work Choices legislation.

Prior to taking up her Branch role, Lisa was the
National Co-ordinator of Industrial and Legal Strategy for the ASU.  As a practising solicitor Lisa worked for the plaintiff law firm Slater and Gordon in their Industrial and Public Interest Unit.

Lisa is a former Federal Women’s Officer of the Australian Education Union (AEU). She has been a long time activist for the advancement of women. 

During 1999 and 2000 Lisa was a delegate to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for the debate regarding the establishment of the new Maternity Protection Convention
No. 183.  This resulted in ground breaking work including the campaign for the establishment of a scheme of paid maternity leave in Australia which continues today.

Lisa is the author of two international lobbying kits on the issue
of Paid Maternity Leave, which have been used by unions, community groups and governments around the world.
