What is the AIER?
The Australian Institute of Employment Rights (AIER) is an independent body formed to promote the rights and responsibilities of employees and employers in Australia’s industrial relations system.

What exactly does it do?
The AIER is a think-tank designed to research and discuss the implementation of certain labour rights. Its particular aim is to see the ratification of International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions and principles in Australia.

What kinds of ‘labour rights’ is the AIER committed to?
The AIER is interested in protecting the many rights of Australian workers, such as the right to a fair wage, family-friendly working hours and the right to collectively bargain. Put simply, the AIER is about creating a fair workplace for all, employees and employers.

But isn’t the AIER just a mouthpiece for the union movement?
No. The AIER’s executive committee consists of employer and independent representatives, as well as those from a union background. The Institute is committed to a tripartite process of participation and discussion– involving employees, employers and the wider public – that can build common ground and consensus.

Why has the AIER been created now?
New Commonwealth industrial relations laws were introduced in 2006. These laws are unfairly balanced in favour of employers and will result (and have already resulted in) many employees losing rights and benefits such as penalty rates, leave and public holidays. The AIER wants to see the protection of these and many other rights as well as recognition of the natural imbalance existent in the employer-employee relationship.

How will the AIER work to protect the rights of employees?
By extensive research and discussion, the AIER wants to elevate existing ILO conventions as a starting point in the effort to protect the rights of Australian employees. To ensure wide participation in this process, the AIER will conduct public conferences and seminars, commission research as well as contribute to the current public discussion of employment issues and concerns.
