Collective Bargaining & Union Recognition Rights: Policy Issues for Australia
The WorkChoices legislation fundamentally altered the balance between rights of employers and working people in Australia, and was the most radical overhaul of the Australian system of industrial relations in more than 100 years. More than this, it was the most radical overhaul of labour market regulation anywhere in the industrialised world. This research report explores what statutory arrangements would be required to once again provide working people with the freedom to choose union representation, for unions to gain recognition when workers choose unions, and to oblige employers to productively engage in collective bargaining with unions. Preventative Health and Workplace Culture
AIER undertook a considerable body of research exploring the links between poor workplace culture and its detrimental effect on the physical and mental health of working people. The study, which formed the basis for a submission to government, found that the greatest investment the Australian Government can make in preventative health is in cultural reform of Australian workplaces. ITF – Low Care Carriers Project
In late 2010, AIER was commissioned by the International Transport Federation (South Pacific Sub-Regional Office) to conduct research regarding the ways that aviation workers within the region could maintain and improve their working conditions, particularly in light of approaches to working conditions and labour rights of ‘low-cost’ aviation carriers. This project will come to fruition in mid 2011.
