The role of the AIER

Iconic Australian employment rights such as the right to a living wage, the eight-hour day and the industrial principle of a “fair go” have shaped Australian society. Employment rights, established through the tri-partite (employer, employee and government representation) processes of the International Labour Organization (ILO), have also been embedded in Australia’s industrial relations system.

These are rights deemed fundamental by the international community, and are set down in international law and standards. The promotion and acceptance of these rights is regarded as essential to the pursuit of a just and fair society.

At a time when core employment rights are being jettisoned without regard for the concerns of employees and fair-minded employers, the AIER aims to inform Australians about these rights and other appropriate employment standards established for the benefit of both employees and employers. It will do so on the premise that core employment rights and productivity and ef.ciency are not mutually exclusive but are in
fact complementary.

It will educate, train and advocate dispassionately by reference to rights and standards that enjoy tri-partite support. A key feature of the Institute will be its independence from government and organisations established as advocates for the interests involved in
the employment relationship.

The Institute will commission authoritative research in conjunction with academic institutions. It will be a public voice for sensible industrial relations policies. Panels of experts will participate and make submissions to parliamentary and governmental inquiries.

Fair-minded employers will be assisted in their efforts to maintain decent workplaces where fair and mutually beneficial rights and standards are observed.
